Albright Institute of Archaeological Research (AIAR) in Jerusalem is the oldest American research center for ancient Near Eastern studies in the Middle East. Founded in 1900 as the American School of Oriental Research (ASOR), it was renamed in 1970 after its most distinguished director, William Foxwell Albright. Today, the Albright is one of three separately incorporated institutes affiliated with ASOR, the others being in Amman and Nicosia. 17

Albright was born in Coquimbo, Chile, the eldest of six children of Amercian evangelical Methodist missionaries Wilbur Finley and Zephine Viola Foxwell Albright. He married Dr. Ruth Norton in 1921 and had four sons. He was also the Director of the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem, 1922-1929, 1933-1936, and did important archaeological work at such sites in Palestine as Gibeah (Tell el-F�l, 1922) and Tell Beit Mirsim (1933-1936). 38

Albright achieved his Doctorate degree in 1913 from Johns Hopkins University where he became Director of the American School of Oriental Research and later lectured for 30 years from 1929. Following the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, Albright?s analytical skills achieved the notable confirmation of the authenticity of these most ancient scripts. 37

The American Academy in Rome is the only American overseas center for independent study and advanced research in the fine arts and the humanities. Through its annual Rome Prize fellowship program, the Academy supports twenty-six individuals working in archaeology, architecture, classical studies, design arts, historic preservation and conservation, history of art, landscape architecture, literature, modern Italian studies, musical composition, post-classical humanistic studies and visual arts. 30
